I decided to look up the topic of gluttony in the Bible. As I looked up the Scriptures, I began to realize how much gluttony and an undisciplined life go hand in hand…a life of disobedience, stubbornness, and rebellion.
Proverbs 25:16 “Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.”
Deuteronomy 21:20 “And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.”
OUCH! That realization is a hard pill to swallow (pardon the pun). Gluttony is so readily accepted in our modern world but that doesn’t make it any less of a sin than it was in Bible times. I am fairly certain that “she was a glutton” is never put on a death certificate and yet I wonder how many people have died because of illnesses brought on because of an appetite based on gluttony. Even Solomon realized this in Proverbs 23:2 “And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
Faith Is the Victory
