Then Samuel took a stone...calling the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. 1 Samuel 7:12

God Can!

I know we have all heard the phrase "God never gives us more than we can handle" but I have often questioned that phrase.  My thought on this was that if God didn't give us more than we could handle, we wouldn't have to rely on Him to help us and to see us through.  Tonight as I was reading the book My Heart Restored, June Kimmel brought up this exact topic.  She puts it this way "I believe there are events that enter our lives that are so devastating that we can survive them only with God's intervention - His gracious help.  He provides the extra strength for such times."

This got me thinking of the 23rd Psalm:

1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.  2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
 4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
 5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

David knew that everything that happened to him had first been allowed by God.  To sit in the presence of one's enemy takes great courage and David knew that God had prepared the table.  To fear no evil in the shadow of death also takes more than the normal courage.  David could rest in the care of God's rod and staff.

I think the phrase would better be said "God never gives us more than HE can handle!"

This can also apply to choosing to eat more healthy.  There are times we just want to binge and eat to beyond stuffed because of stress in our lives.  God wants us to look to Him for our comfort and not to food.  Gluttony will only bring us more pain and sorrow when we come to our senses and realize what we have done.  If we turn to God and let Him meet our need, we will have joy and no regrets.  I pray this for each of you reading this blog post.  I pray that you choose to please God and not self.  I pray the same for myself.

Be Thou My Vision
Mary E. Byrne

1. Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art;
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

2. Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

3. Riches I heed not, or man's empty praise,
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

4. High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
